Sonny’s phone made some sound. He got up. I followed him back to his room, took my position off to the side.

“I can’t stay long,” Brenda said on the screen. “He’ll be back soon.”

“He’d be mad?”

“Oh, no,” she told him, relaxed about saying the words. “He never gets mad. I just don’t think...I don’t want to say anything yet. I mean, I don’t know how I’m going to...”

Sonny let her words trail off.

When nothing followed, he asked her, “Could we do this tomorrow, maybe?”

“Sure, but...I mean, don’t you have school? “

“You do, too,” Sonny said.

Brenda giggled. “Okay. At...ten, all right?”

“I’ll be here,” Sonny said. “I feel a flu coming on.” She giggled again. Then the screen went blank.”
